Meet the Grapes

The U.S. government officially recognizes 350+ grape varieties for wine labels, but American vineyards grow far more than the usual Cab and Chardonnay. From European classics like Pinot Noir and Riesling to cold-hardy hybrids such as Marquette and Traminette, the U.S. is home to a mix of tradition and invention. Whether it’s Tempranillo thriving in Texas, Riesling braving Michigan winters, or Norton making a comeback in Virginia, American grapes reflect the country’s patchwork of climates, and the rebellious spirit of winemakers willing to experiment.

Spicy, Rustic, Vibrant

Blaufränkisch

Don’t let the name intimidate you, Blaufränkisch is bold, spicy, and refreshingly tart. It’s a high-acid red that balances wild berry fruit with earthy depth and a little bite.

Herbal, Juicy, Peppery

Cabernet Franc

Cabernet Franc is the thoughtful sibling in the Bordeaux family. It's cool, composed, and full of quiet surprises. Lighter than Cab Sauv, but more herbal, more savory, and just as complex when it wants to be.

Bold, Powerful, Velvety

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is the CEO of red wine. It's bold, structured, and not here to mess around. It’s powerful, polished, and plays the long game. Cab Sauv is the most popular red wine in the United States.

Juicy, Rustic, Easygoing

Chambourcin

Chambourcin is a bold, no-nonsense hybrid that punches above its weight. Deep in color and full of fruit, it thrives where vinifera vines (most European grapes) struggle. It brings structure, spice, and a whole lot of character to the glass.

Buttery, Toasty, Complex

Chardonnay

Chardonnay is the ultimate chameleon. It can be lean and bright or rich and creamy, depending on who’s making it and where. It's a grape that can hang at both a beach picnic and a white-tablecloth dinner.

Fruity, Juicy, Easy Drinking

Concord

Concord is pure Americana nostalgia in a glass. Think grape popsicles at the fair, PB&J lunches, and childhood grape juice turned into a grown-up drink.

Floral, Spicy, Silky

Gewürztraminer

Gewürztraminer is floral, flashy, and unafraid to be noticed. It smells like a bouquet and tastes like spice, and while it might seem sweet at first, it’s a lot more complex than people give it credit for.

Juicy, Rustic, Vibrant

Grenache

Grenache is that effortlessly cool friend who always shows up with good snacks and great energy. It’s warm, generous, and a little spicy.

Velvety, Jammy, Smoky

Malbec

Malbec is the strong-but-silent type. It's dark, smooth, and unexpectedly charming. It’s rich without being overwhelming, and bold without being aggressive.

Rustic, Vibrant, Spicy

Marquette

Marquette is the new-school star of cold-climate reds. Bright, berry-driven, and smooth, it’s proof that hybrids can be both serious and seriously delicious.

Smooth, Easy Drinking, Juicy

Merlot

Merlot is the people-pleaser of red wine. It's approachable, smooth, and totally unbothered by its reputation. It’s the friend who’s always invited to dinner because they get along with everyone.

Tropical, Fruity, Easygoing

Niagara

Niagara is Concord’s more delicate cousin. Juicy, floral, and grapey in the most literal way, it feels like walking through a summer vineyard at peak ripeness.

Rustic, Bold, Savory

Norton

Norton is the underdog fighter of American wine. Dark, earthy, and full of grit, it’s bold and distinctive, a grape that doesn’t try to be European, because it’s entirely its own.

Bold, Intense, Big Tannin

Petit Sirah

Petite Sirah is the heavyweight champ of American reds. It’s the wine equivalent of a leather jacket and steel-toe boots, but with a soft side once you get to know it.

Crisp, Zesty, Fresh

Picpoul

Picpoul is zesty and straight-to-the-point. It’s all about sharp citrus and seaside energy, like a squeeze of lemon over fresh oysters. Bright, bracing, and unapologetically refreshing.

Crisp, Zesty, Easy Drinking

Pinot Gris (Pinot Grigio)

Pinot Gris is a shape-shifter. It's light and crisp in some places, rich and textured in others. It’s one of the most versatile white grapes, with a flavor that ranges from bright citrus to mellow orchard fruit, depending on where it’s grown.

Elegant, Silky, Earthy

Pinot Noir

Pinot Noir is the indie movie of red wine. It's subtle, expressive, and sometimes a little emotional. It earned the nickname “the heartbreak grape” because it can be tough to grow due to its delicate skins that make it prone to disease, rot, and mildew.

Zesty, Crisp, Floral

Riesling

Riesling is expressive and versatile. Known for its high acidity and powerful aromatics, it can range from bone dry to lusciously sweet. It’s precise, balanced, and bound to win you over.

Herbal, Zippy, Fresh

Sauvignon Blanc

Sauvignon Blanc is the sharp, zesty overachiever of white wine. It’s high-acid, crisp, and never boring. It's the second most popular white wine in the U.S. (after Chardonnay).

Spicy, Bold, Smoky

Syrah

Syrah is the brooding artist of the wine world: intense, a little mysterious, and packing way more flavor than it lets on. It’s smoky, spicy, and complex, but it’s not here to show off. It’s just naturally cool.

Big Tannin, Intense, Rustic

Tannat

Tannat is the heavyweight champ of red wine. Dark, dense, and powerfully tannic, it’s structured to go the distance. Intense on its own, but with the right touch it softens into something bold yet balanced.

Floral, Zesty, Juicy

Traminette

Traminette is Gewürztraminer’s American daughter, fragrant, floral, and lightly spiced. It’s approachable but still expressive, offering a friendly gateway into the world of aromatic whites.

Peachy, Floral, Smooth

Viognier

Viognier is unapologetically aromatic and full-bodied. It's a white wine with the texture of a red and the perfume of a flower shop. It’s lush, expressive, and all about bold flavor without the bite of high acidity.

Jammy, Spicy, Bursting with Berries

Zinfandel

Zinfandel is the life of the party who also knows the family history. Loud, warm, and always a little wild, but its roots run deep. It sometimes has some unique flavors like bacon or coca-cola but it's always unapologetically itself.
